UPDATE Oct 2020
When we first started Purple Peanuts Japanese Cafe in Oct 2010 the Business Plan was always to do traditional Japanese food with a twist.
One of the main reasons we called the cafe "Purple Peanuts", besides purple being (to us) a '60's associated hippie color... was that we thought the name allowed the cafe not to be stereotyped.
It allowed us flexibility with the menu in not being 100% traditional in taste or presentation. Pursue Japanese flavours without going too overboard.
We hired multicultural staff, some had to be Japanese of course but it was also nice to have different nationalities. Some are tattooed or pierced and often abit quirky but all are customer focused & care about Japanese food, cakes, coffee...and music.
By being called Purple Peanuts and not boring stereotyped names "Samurai cafe" or "Tokyo Diner" etc it also allows us to play Hendrix, Soundgarden, NWA, Black Sabbath, Dandy Warhols, Johnny Cash, Mc5, Nirvana, Ravi Shanker or even the odd Greek bouziki instrumental right after each other.
The plan was to mix Japanese food, hippie vegetarian food, specialty coffee, cakes, ekiben (bento box), shojin ryori food & japanese convenience store food like onigiri, hijiki or kinpira packs next to take home frozen meals.
Its taken a long time but Covid has prompted us to complete what we originally intended 10 years ago.
The journey continues...
